ASCAP Joins in Supporting President Obama's National United We Serve Initiative

ASCAP’s more than 350,000 members are urged to promote and participate in summer community service

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have just launched a new national service initiative, United We Serve (Serve.gov), that calls on all Americans to find ways to serve in their communities. Citing unprecedented challenges facing America’s economy, the program seeks to help bolster renewal and recovery by making it easy for people to find ways to serve in their communities, and to create and promote their own service projects.

ASCAP, representing more than 350,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers, represents one of the country’s most powerful creative communities. The White House has expressed a high level of interest and hope that music creators will take a leading role in helping to build momentum for this initiative. That is why ASCAP is joining in the effort to help spread word about United We Serve and to encourage all ASCAP members to engage and activate those in their own individual networks, such as fans, collaborators, colleagues and business associates, to participate in creating meaningful change in their own communities.

The program provides both the information and the tools to promote community service in three primary focus areas: Environment and Clean Energy, Education and Healthcare. At Serve.gov, visitors can type in their zip codes to find local volunteer opportunities, recruit volunteers by posting their organization’s projects or get ideas for creating their own projects.

For more information on United We Serve, visit the ASCAP Green Room at http://www.ascap.com/playback/greenroom/ and see examples of what some ASCAP members are doing to help protect the environment and to promote environmentally sustainable business practices.

When consumers AND creators are happy
everyone in the middle will have gotten digital distribution right
.

[Two of our favorite thinkers, Chris Castle and Andrew Orlowski, together again for the first time.]
The Music Wars from 30,000 feet: Meet Chris Castle
By Andrew Orlowski -- Interview: Ebullient lawyer Chris Castle has a unique perspective on the Music Wars. A former Sony and A&M executive who "switched sides" to Silicon Valley, then found himself defending the original Napster, which he called one of the greatest inventions of the 20th Century. His clients range from technology companies to major recording artists ... here are his views on the music business' biggest errors - and whether there's any cause for optimism. He's never dull, it's mostly Chris in his own words.

'Music as Free': Solutions
By Mark Mulligan -- I've been encouraged to see a significant upturn in the number of pro-music posters participating in the 'Music as Free' debate, it's brought some long overdue balance to the argument. There have also been some interesting suggestions about potential next steps. [Could be that our readers have contributed to this debate. If so, keep up the good work. Let yourself be heard every time the creator's contribution to our culture is undervalued or goes unrecognized.]

[Is Mr. Einzinger correct? Has our audience really valued what we do at zero?]
Should The EU Rethink Copyright Law For The Digital Music Age?
By David Cronin -- "I personally have LPs of The Rolling Stones and Cream at home," he said. "But my kids get a piece of music and they listen to [it] and that's it. They don't keep it. They wouldn't pay one euro or one dollar for listening one time to a piece of music." - Kurt Einzinger, president of the Internet Service Providers Association (EuroISPA).

If You Liked This, You're Sure to Love That
By Clive Thompson -- It used to be that if you wanted to buy a book, rent a movie or shop for some music, you had to rely on flesh-and-blood judgment — yours, or that of someone you trusted. ... The advent of online retailing completely upended this cultural and economic ecosystem. [Thanks to David Basskin for the T.O.]

Digital Sales Surpass CDs at Atlantic
Since MP3s first became popular a decade ago, music industry executives have obsessed over this question: when would digital music revenue finally surpass compact disc sales?

Online Video Not Killing TV, Says Nielsen

Big Media Muscles in on the User-Generated Web
By Richard Siklos -- If you visit YouTube.com – where close to half of all online video is seen – the power-to-the-people motto "Broadcast yourself" appears at the top of your browser. Lately, though, it's hard not to wonder whether the "you" in YouTube doesn't increasingly refer to "them" – the Big Kahuna media companies whose video wares have been gaining more notice both on YouTube and elsewhere on the Web. [Again, thank you Mr. Basskin]

Satellite Radio Is Dead
By Mike Elgan -- I hate to say it, but somebody has to: Satellite radio will come crashing down to Earth within the next two years. The newly merged Sirius XM Radio is already living on borrowed time -- and borrowed money -- and simply will not and cannot survive. [Jeez, what do I need me for if I've got David Basskin? Thanks, David.]

WMG Digital Revenue Up 39%

ISP Must Continue to Block The Pirate Bay
Written by enigmax -- In February 2008, a Danish court ordered the ISP Tele2 to block its customers from accessing The Pirate Bay. The controversial ruling was under appeal but today, in a move which will delight the IFPI, the High Court upheld the decision to force the ISP to stop its customers from accessing the world's largest BitTorrent tracker.

[If you read this story, it's important, if you are a creator, that you also read the call for common sense posted by Neil Turkewitz as a response to the article.]
CHISINAU, MOLDOVA: Librarians Take The Copyright Battleground In Developing Countries
By William New -- Most experts agree that giving exclusive rights to creators encourages creativity. And almost as many agree that cultures must provide access to existing ideas in order for more ideas to sprout. A primary way to do that, the standard practice in the leading copyright-producing nations, is through exceptions to copyright for special uses such as libraries and archives.
